What is a Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure commonly referred to as a “nose job.” It is a cosmetic surgery that aims to improve the appearance of the nose or to correct breathing problems caused by structural issues in the nose.
Why do people have nose jobs?
People get nose jobs, or rhinoplasty, for a variety of reasons, including:
Cosmetic Purposes
Many people are unhappy with the appearance of their nose and wish to change it for aesthetic reasons. Rhinoplasty can alter the overall appearance of the nose to create a more harmonious and attractive facial profile.
Breathing problems
Some people may have structural abnormalities in their nose. This can make it difficult to breathe properly. Rhinoplasty can correct issues, such as a deviated septum or narrow nasal passages, and improve overall breathing function.
Injury or trauma
If someone has experienced an injury or trauma to their nose, such as a broken nose, rhinoplasty may be necessary to restore the shape and function of the nose.
Congenital deformities
Some people are born with congenital deformities of the nose, such as a cleft palate or a malformed nasal structure, that can affect breathing and appearance. Rhinoplasty can help to correct these issues and improve overall quality of life.

Rhinoplasty Consultation
Before any surgery commences, a consultation is a must. Having a rhinoplasty consultation is important for many reasons, this includes:
Assessing candidacy: A consultation allows the plastic surgeon to evaluate the patient’s overall health and medical history to determine whether they are a good candidate for the procedure. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for rhinoplasty, and a consultation is an opportunity for the surgeon to identify any potential risks or complications that may arise.
Discussing goals and expectations: A consultation provides an opportunity for the patient to discuss their goals and expectations for the procedure with the plastic surgeon. The surgeon can provide feedback on the feasibility of the desired outcome and provide recommendations for achieving the best results.
Education: A consultation is an opportunity for the patient to learn about the rhinoplasty procedure, including the potential risks and benefits involved. The surgeon can explain the various techniques used, the type of anesthesia required, and the recovery process.
Addressing concerns: A consultation allows the patient to ask any questions or voice any concerns they may have about the procedure. This can help to alleviate any anxiety or uncertainty about the surgery and ensure that the patient feels fully informed and comfortable with the decision to undergo the procedure.
Overall, a rhinoplasty consultation is an important step in the process of deciding whether or not to undergo the procedure. It provides an opportunity for the patient to receive personalized advice and recommendations from a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, and to make an informed decision about the best course of action for achieving their desired outcome.
Rhinoplasty Surgery
During a rhinoplasty, the surgeon will first administer anesthesia to ensure that the patient is comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure. Depending on the extent of the surgery, either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation is necessary.
The surgeon will then make incisions inside the nostrils or on the skin between the nostrils, depending on the technique used. Through these incisions, the surgeon will reshape the bone, cartilage, and tissue in the nose to achieve the desired outcome. The surgeon may remove some tissue, add tissue grafts, or reposition the tissue to create the desired shape.
If the patient has any breathing problems, the surgeon may also address these during the procedure by correcting any structural abnormalities in the nose, such as a deviated septum.
Once the reshaping is complete, the surgeon will close the incisions with stitches or surgical glue, and place a splint or cast over the nose to protect and support it during the initial healing process.
After the procedure, the patient will need to rest and avoid any strenuous activities for a few days. Pain and swelling are common during the recovery process, and the patient may need to wear the splint or cast for several days to a week. Follow-up appointments with the surgeon will be necessary to monitor healing and to ensure we achieve the desired outcome.
Recovering from a Rhinoplasty
How long does recovery take?
Most patients go home the same day and return to the office 7 days after the operation for cast and internal splint removal.
The majority of patients see immediate results as soon as the cast is removed. However, it can take up to 18 months to see the final result with the refinement and definition.
