What to Expect During Recovery After Rhinoplasty Surgery

Oct 23, 2025

Deciding to undergo rhinoplasty is a significant step, and knowing what to expect during the recovery period is crucial for a smooth and successful outcome. The healing process is a journey, and being prepared can help you feel more comfortable and confident as your new nose takes shape.

The First Week: Rest and Initial Healing

The first few days after your surgery are the most critical for rest. You will have a cast or splint on your nose to provide support and protection. Swelling and bruising, particularly around the eyes, are completely normal and will be at their peak during this time. You can expect to feel congested, similar to having a bad cold.

Your surgeon will provide specific instructions for care, which you must follow carefully. This will include keeping your head elevated (even while sleeping) to help reduce swelling and avoiding any strenuous activity. Pain is typically manageable with prescribed medication. After about a week, you will return to your surgeon’s office to have the cast and any external stitches removed.

Weeks Two to Four: Returning to Normalcy

Once the cast is off, you will see the initial changes to your nose, but significant swelling will still be present. During these weeks, the bruising will fade, and you will start to feel more like yourself. Most people feel comfortable returning to work or school after about two weeks, as long as their job isn’t physically demanding.

It is vital to continue avoiding strenuous exercise, contact sports, and any activity that could risk impact to your nose. You should also be gentle when washing your face and avoid wearing glasses that rest heavily on the bridge of your nose.

The Months Ahead: Patience is Key

While you’ll look and feel much better after a month, the healing process for rhinoplasty is long. Residual swelling can take up to a year, or even longer, to fully disappear, especially at the nasal tip. It’s important to be patient as your nose gradually settles into its final, refined shape. Following your surgeon’s guidance throughout this journey is the best way to ensure a beautiful result you will enjoy for years to come.
